Hosts Morocco delivered an early warning to their WAFCON rivals with a ruthless 4-0 demolition of Kenya, while Algeria showed composure and defensive discipline to defeat Senegal 2-0 on the opening day of the 2026 tournament.
The two Group A matches produced six goals, two clean sheets and strong opening statements from Morocco and Algeria as the expanded 16-team competition got underway in Rabat.
Morocco, playing in front of their home supporters, wasted little time imposing themselves against Kenya. Sakina Ouzraoui Diki broke the deadlock before Maryame Atiq added a second as the hosts established control over the contest.
Jraïdi then took centre stage, scoring twice to complete Morocco’s 4-0 victory. The result underlined the attacking strength of the Atlas Lionesses and gave them a major boost in the race to finish top of Group A.
Earlier, Algeria had faced a more difficult test against Senegal. The match remained closely balanced until captain Marine Dafeur converted a penalty shortly before half-time to give the Algerians a crucial advantage.
Senegal attempted to respond after the break, but Algeria remained compact and prevented their opponents from finding an equaliser. The Desert Lionesses sealed victory in the 88th minute when Mélissa Bethi took advantage of a costly error from goalkeeper Khady Faye.
The opening results leave Morocco and Algeria with three points each, although Morocco’s superior goal difference gives the hosts the early advantage. Senegal and Kenya are still without points and face increased pressure heading into the second round of group fixtures.
For Morocco, the performance was an ideal start to a tournament being staged on home soil. For Algeria, the victory demonstrated that defensive organisation and clinical finishing could make them difficult opponents in the battle for qualification.
The opening day has already set up an intriguing Group A contest, with Morocco’s attacking power and Algeria’s disciplined approach emerging as two contrasting but effective routes to success.
