Andrea Pirlo has spoken publicly for the first time after missing out on becoming Italy’s national team head coach, insisting the controversy surrounding his commercial links to a Russian betting company unfairly derailed his candidacy and distorted his personal beliefs.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner released a strongly worded statement after learning he was no longer under consideration for the Italy job, bringing an end to one of the most controversial managerial searches in recent Italian football history. Pirlo had emerged as the leading candidate following extensive discussions led by Italian Football Federation (FIGC) technical director Paolo Maldini and advisor Leonardo before political backlash ultimately forced a dramatic change of course.
“In recent days, I have watched with great bitterness the debate that has developed around my name and the possibility of covering the role of Technical Commissioner for the Italian National Team,” Pirlo wrote. “Out of respect for the institutions, the Federation, and all the people involved, I have chosen to remain silent for now. However, I feel it is necessary to clarify some aspects.”
The controversy centred on Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for Russian betting company Fonbet, a partnership signed while he was managing United FC in the United Arab Emirates. Critics argued that the association was incompatible with leading the Italian national team given the continuing geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Pirlo categorically rejected suggestions that the partnership reflected any political allegiance, insisting it was strictly a commercial arrangement linked to his coaching career in the UAE.
“Throughout my career, first as a footballer and now as a coach, I have always carried out my duties with full respect for the laws of the countries where I worked and the contracts I signed. The professional collaboration in question stems from my work path in the United Arab Emirates and is exclusively of a commercial and sporting nature.”
He added that attempts to attach political meaning to the agreement amounted to assigning views he had never expressed.
“Attributing such collaboration to a political meaning means attributing to me beliefs I have never expressed and that do not belong to me.”
Pirlo also paid tribute to Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, the two men who championed his appointment throughout the recruitment process.
“I would like to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the esteem and trust they have shown me. I know their expertise, their seriousness, and the love they have always dedicated to Italian football.”
Notably, Pirlo’s message made no mention of FIGC president Giovanni Malagò, whose administration ultimately decided not to proceed with the appointment after days of growing political pressure. Reuters reported that lawmakers, public officials and sections of the Italian media questioned whether Pirlo’s relationship with Fonbet made him an appropriate figure to represent the national team.
The former Juventus, AC Milan and Italy midfielder also expressed disappointment that what began as a football appointment became engulfed in broader public controversy.
“I regret that a sports choice was quickly dragged into a public debate that ended up attributing meanings and intentions to me that do not belong to me.”
Pirlo later confirmed in a second social media post that he had officially been informed he was no longer a candidate for the position, effectively ending speculation over his appointment.
His withdrawal leaves the FIGC searching once again for a coach capable of reviving the Azzurri after another disappointing cycle. The federation had previously explored the availability of Pep Guardiola before those talks failed to produce an agreement, while Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte have also been linked with the vacancy.
Despite the disappointment, Pirlo closed his statement by reaffirming that his connection to his country remains unchanged.
“Love for Italy does not depend on a position. It is part of my story, my identity, and will continue to accompany me always.”
