The Super Eagles will return to Russia in October for a second meeting with the European side in 16 months, with the fixture coming immediately after Nigeria’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Nigeria will face Russia in an international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with the fixture now confirmed by both the Nigeria Football Federation and the Russian Football Union.
The encounter will be the second senior international meeting between the two countries, following their 1-1 draw at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025.
The Russian Football Union confirmed on September 8 that Valery Karpin’s team will face Nigeria in Nizhny Novgorod as part of its autumn training camp. Russia will also play Iran in Kazan on September 29 and Namibia in Yekaterinburg on October 3 before taking on the Super Eagles.
Nigeria’s return to Russia will come at the end of a demanding competitive window. Eric Chelle’s side will open their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, before travelling to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau four days later on September 29. CAF has confirmed both fixtures as Matchdays 1 and 2 in Group L.
That makes the October 6 encounter with Russia an immediate opportunity for Chelle to assess his squad after two competitive qualifiers.
Rematch after Moscow draw
The first meeting between Nigeria and Russia ended 1-1 in Moscow.
Russia went ahead in the 27th minute after Semi Ajayi inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, but Tolu Arokodare equalised in the 71st minute to earn Nigeria a share of the spoils.
The match also represented Arokodare’s first senior international goal for Nigeria.
The upcoming fixture therefore gives both teams a chance to measure their progress against familiar opposition more than a year after their first encounter.
Nigeria subsequently continued its programme of high-profile friendlies in 2026, drawing 2-2 with Poland in Warsaw before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Leiria.
Before those European friendlies, the Super Eagles retained the Unity Cup in London, defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 in the semi-final before beating Jamaica 3-0 in the final.
Nizhny Novgorod returns to international spotlight
The match will be played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, one of the venues constructed for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA lists the stadium’s World Cup capacity at 45,000 spectators, while the NFF and Russian Football Union have referred to the current venue in the context of the upcoming fixture at around 44,000 capacity.
Russia have previously played a competitive international at the stadium, defeating Cyprus 1-0 in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier on June 11, 2019. Alexey Ionov scored the only goal, while the Russian Football Union recorded an attendance of 42,228.
The October meeting will consequently be only Russia’s second senior international at the venue.
Ranking advantage for Nigeria
The latest official FIFA men’s rankings currently place Nigeria 26th in the world and Russia 35th. FIFA’s ranking pages show that both positions were from the July 20, 2026 update, with the next official ranking scheduled for October 7 — one day after the friendly.
That makes the Nizhny Novgorod fixture particularly interesting from a ranking perspective, although its primary value for Nigeria will be preparation and squad assessment following the AFCON qualifiers.
With Nigeria facing Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau before travelling to Russia, Chelle will have another opportunity to test his players against a European opponent and assess the depth and balance of his squad ahead of the next phase of international competition.
