Nwabali Explains Chippa Exit: “I Want to Win Trophies Before I Retire”

By Rasheed Adewuyi, New York

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has revealed that his decision to leave South Africa’s Chippa United immediately after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco was driven by his ambition to win trophies and compete at a higher level before the end of his career.

Nwabali confirmed his desire to move on in early February 2026, and Chippa United officially announced his departure on February 5, 2026, after he requested a release to pursue a new challenge. The shot-stopper submitted his request while on international duty with Nigeria during AFCON 2025.

Speaking in an interview with South African radio host Andile Ncube, the 29-year-old made it clear that his priorities at this stage of his career are centred on competition, growth, and silverware.

“Every strong player wants competition,” Nwabali said. “I want competition because when you get competition, you can see what you want to fix in your life and in your career.”

Despite confirming his exit, Nwabali disclosed that he currently has no concrete offer on the table, stressing that timing and personal fulfilment are key factors in his next move.

“Nothing changed. In football, you wait for the right moment. You really need to enjoy where you’re staying,” he added. “Football is something that deals with happiness. Your happiness comes first.”

The Super Eagles goalkeeper emphasized that while he remains committed to Nigeria’s national team ambitions, expressing belief that the team could soon achieve something tangible, he is eager to secure club success as well. According to Nwabali, the last trophy he won came during his stint with Katsina United, and lifting silverware again remains a personal dream.

Sources close to the player suggest he is seeking a more competitive environment, with potential interest in opportunities in Europe or Asia following his rise in stature on the international stage.

Nwabali’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter at Chippa United, where his performances earned him national recognition and solidified his place as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
