Otto Addo Takes GFA to FIFA, Demands Over $750,000 Following Black Stars Exit

Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has reportedly lodged a formal complaint with FIFA against the Ghana Football Association (GFA), seeking more than $750,000 in compensation following the termination of his contract in March 2026.

According to an exclusive report by JoySports, Addo turned to football’s world governing body after several unsuccessful attempts to secure payment from the GFA.

The former Black Stars manager is challenging what he considers the unilateral termination of his contract, with his financial claim reportedly covering the unexpired portion of his agreement and other contractual obligations.

Addo was earning a monthly salary of $50,000 after signing a 34-month contract with the GFA in March 2024. He reportedly had 10 months remaining on the agreement when the association ended his appointment.

JoySports reports that the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach is seeking more than $750,000, although the precise breakdown of the compensation and additional contractual entitlements has not been disclosed.

The GFA officially announced Addo’s immediate departure on March 31, 2026, following Ghana’s disappointing performances during the March international window.

The Black Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before losing 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart. The consecutive losses extended Ghana’s losing streak to four matches and intensified pressure on the technical leadership.

His dismissal came just over two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an abrupt end to his preparations for the tournament.

Addo returned for his second spell as Ghana’s head coach in March 2024, having previously guided the national team between 2022 and 2023, including their campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

His reappointment followed the departure of Chris Hughton, with the GFA offering him a 34-month contract and an option for a further two-year extension.

The financial dispute also brings renewed attention to previous salary-payment challenges involving Ghana’s national team coaching staff.

In May 2025, the Ghana News Agency reported that the government had cleared outstanding salary arrears owed to current and former Black Stars coaches. The report specifically confirmed that Addo received payments covering October 2024 to March 2025.

JoyNews also reported at the time that Addo received approximately $420,000 in salaries and other contractual entitlements following the government’s intervention.

However, the latest dispute concerns the financial consequences of the termination of his contract, and it remains unclear what settlement, if any, was reached between the coach and the GFA when his appointment ended.

The association has yet to publicly respond to the reported FIFA complaint or clarify its position on Addo’s compensation demands.

The case could now place the circumstances surrounding the termination of the former coach’s contract and the GFA’s outstanding contractual obligations under further scrutiny.
