Former Socceroos captain and human rights advocate Craig Foster has called for football players and supporters to unite in demanding sweeping governance reforms at FIFA, arguing that the sport’s most influential stakeholders—not administrators—hold the greatest leverage to restore accountability and credibility to world football.
His remarks come as FIFA faces renewed scrutiny over governance following widespread backlash against a now-abandoned proposal to commercialize aspects of the FIFA World Cup through a private investment structure. The controversy has triggered criticism from football federations, players’ unions and governance experts, prompting fresh debate about transparency, concentration of power and democratic oversight within football’s governing body.
“It is going to take strengthening of voices and institutions outside FIFA, particularly players and fans—the key stakeholders of the game—to finally reform a FIFA that periodically stumbles into crisis and disgrace,” Foster said.
According to Foster, meaningful reform cannot rely solely on internal mechanisms within FIFA. Instead, he believes football requires stronger independent oversight and coordinated action from players’ associations and organized supporter groups.
“The first step is to create genuine external accountability. There is not enough of this occurring, which is why we arrived here again.”
