Prime Minister Mark Carneyjoined Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow at a news conference in Toronto on Wednesday following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recognizing Toronto’s role in hosting one of the world’s largest sporting events.
During the news conference, Carney paid tribute to those whose efforts helped make the FIFA World Cup a success in Toronto, acknowledging the broad collaboration required to deliver the tournament. The event brought together leaders from the federal, provincial and municipal governments following Canada’s co-hosting of the tournament with the United States and Mexico. Reuters and local Canadian media confirmed the joint appearance by Carney, Ford and Chow.
Carney appeared alongside Premier Ford and Mayor Chow, whose governments worked together on planning, infrastructure, transportation and public safety for the tournament. Toronto was one of Canada’s two host cities, alongside Vancouver.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came as he also addressed questions about FIFA governance, saying he no longer has confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the handling of a now-withdrawn proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights to the World Cup. Carney said the lack of transparency surrounding the proposal represented a serious failure of governance.
Premier Ford separately praised Mayor Chow, volunteers, first responders, organizers and public servants for helping deliver a successful tournament, highlighting the collaborative effort behind Toronto’s hosting of the event.
