PSG and Atletico Seize Champions League Control as Liverpool and Barcelona Left With Mountain to Climb

Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid took major strides toward the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night after recording commanding first-leg victories over Liverpool and Barcelona respectively in two heavyweight European quarter-final clashes.

At the Parc des Princes, PSG outclassed Liverpool 2-0 to take control of their tie, while Atletico Madrid stunned 10-man Barcelona with an equally impressive 2-0 victory in Catalonia.

Paris Saint-Germain delivered one of their most complete performances of the season to defeat Liverpool 2-0 in the French capital, leaving Arne Slot’s men with significant work to do at Anfield.

Teenage midfielder Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Liverpool failed to clear sustained pressure, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the advantage in the 66th minute with a composed finish after a flowing team move.

Luis Enrique’s side dominated large portions of the encounter, controlling possession and consistently exposing Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities with quick transitions and aggressive pressing.

Reflecting on the contest, the PSG manager praised both his team and Liverpool’s approach.

“It was fun to play against Arne Slot and his team because they try to play an attacking style, and it was enjoyable to watch,” Luis Enrique said.

Liverpool now face the daunting task of overturning a two-goal deficit at Anfield, though Slot insisted his side must quickly refocus on domestic duties before the return leg.

“We knew when we came back from the international break all these games would be vital,” Slot said ahead of Liverpool’s league clash with Fulham.

“We need wins in the league. I hope my players can bring the same mentality. At the Etihad we didn’t get the win but we tried from the first until the last second.”

Atletico Capitalise on Red Card to Shock Barcelona

At the Camp Nou, Atletico Madrid took firm control of their quarter-final after defeating Barcelona 2-0 in a dramatic contest shaped by Pau Cubarsí’s first-half dismissal.

Barcelona had started brightly and looked the more threatening side before the match turned in the 44th minute when Cubarsí was shown a straight red card for hauling down Giuliano Simeone as the Atletico forward raced through on goal.

Moments later, Julian Alvarez punished the hosts by converting the resulting free-kick to give Diego Simeone’s side the lead before halftime.

Atletico doubled their advantage in the second half through Alexander Sorloth, who finished off a swift counterattack to put the visitors in command of the tie.

Despite the setback, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick praised his players’ response after the sending-off.

“We believe in ourselves, because in the second half, despite being down with 10 men, we put in a very good performance,” Flick said.

The German coach, however, was left furious with officiating and questioned a key VAR decision after Barcelona were denied a penalty for handball.

“Atletico’s goalkeeper passed the ball to his defender, and the centre-back touched it with his hand without even looking,” Flick said.

“So, what’s the point of VAR?”

Both PSG and Atletico now carry healthy two-goal advantages into their respective second legs and are within touching distance of the semi-finals.

For Liverpool and Barcelona, however, the road ahead is steep.

Liverpool must summon another famous European comeback at Anfield against a PSG side growing in confidence under Luis Enrique, while Barcelona face the equally daunting challenge of overturning a deficit away to Diego Simeone’s notoriously disciplined Atletico.

If Wednesday’s results hold, Europe could be headed for a blockbuster semi-final lineup.

But with second legs still to come, both defeated giants will believe their Champions League hopes remain alive—however faintly.
