Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after its Disciplinary Council formally opened proceedings over his departure from Portugal’s national team camp in Copenhagen.
The federation confirmed the development on Saturday, October 10, escalating a dispute that has drawn international attention following the 41-year-old captain’s decision to leave the squad ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark.
According to Portuguese public broadcaster RTP, the Disciplinary Council said the case concerns the possible disciplinary implications of events reported on October 7, following Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp on September 30.
The council also ordered a provisional suspension that is not automatic and designated the proceedings as urgent. The case has been referred to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee, with public disclosure of the proceedings restricted until the investigation stage is completed.
Ronaldo had already been subject to an automatic preventive suspension under the federation’s disciplinary regulations following his departure from the camp.
The latest decision does not establish a final punishment. The disciplinary process will determine the consequences, if any, after the relevant circumstances have been examined.
The controversy began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway, despite warming up during the match. He subsequently left the camp in Copenhagen before the scheduled encounter with Denmark, following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The episode has raised questions about the future relationship between Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and the national team. However, the immediate issue is now a formal disciplinary case rather than speculation over the captain’s international future.
