Manchester City F.C. tightened the Premier League title race after grinding out a crucial 1–0 victory away to Leeds United F.C., with Antoine Semenyo scoring the decisive goal to keep the champions within touching distance of league leaders Arsenal F.C..
Semenyo’s solitary strike proved the difference in a tense encounter at Elland Road, as Pep Guardiola’s side reduced the gap at the top of the table to just two points, maintaining relentless pressure in the closing stretch of the campaign.
Speaking after the match, the Ghanaian forward described the strike as potentially his most significant moment since joining City.
“Definitely [my most important goal for City]. Every game is important, happy for the win but still a lot of games to go so we just need to keep going. All we can do is win our games.”
The 24-year-old emphasized the magnitude of competing at the highest level while remaining grounded about the task ahead.
“It’s a lot – you dream to play at this level. It’s obviously tough but I’m embracing it.”
Semenyo also opened up about adjusting to the tactical demands of manager Pep Guardiola, admitting the transition has not been straightforward.
“It’s been tough, it hasn’t been easy. I think how he wants me to be is high in attacking positions, be out wide, and once we have the ball defensively, be narrow. It’s obviously not easy, it’s a hard graft, but I’m quite versatile in that sense.”
Traditionally deployed as a wide forward, Semenyo acknowledged the shift in positional expectations under Guardiola’s fluid system.
“It’s pretty different, I’m usually just a wide man but I’m adapting, and I’m just doing whatever I can for the team.”
City’s victory ensures the defending champions remain firmly in contention as the title race approaches its decisive phase. With Arsenal still setting the pace, Guardiola’s men know perfection may be required in the remaining fixtures.
For Semenyo, however, the focus is simple: consistency and collective effort.
“All we can do is win our games.”
If his match-winning contribution at Leeds is any indication, the versatile forward could play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of this season’s championship battle.
