Canada captain Alphonso Davies has urged his teammates to quickly turn their attention to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after helping the co-hosts secure a historic knockout victory over South Africa, insisting there is little time to celebrate with an even bigger challenge on the horizon.
Making his long-awaited return after missing much of the group stage through injury, Davies came off the bench to inject pace and energy into Canada’s attack as Jesse Marsch’s side earned a dramatic victory to reach the last 16 of the Men’s FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Reflecting on his return, the Bayern Munich star admitted watching from the sidelines in recent weeks had been difficult, making his comeback all the more emotional.
“I felt great. The last couple of weeks I was watching the games, wishing I was out there. These boys did their job in the group stage and gave me an opportunity to step on the pitch today and live this World Cup.”
Davies believed his introduction gave Canada fresh momentum during a tightly contested encounter.
“I think I brought a little bit of energy. As a substitute, you always try to bring something different. I’m happy that we got the win.”
The victory carried special meaning for Davies, whose journey with the Canadian national team began long before the country’s emergence as a World Cup contender.
Asked what he would say to his 18-year-old self after speaking at the FIFA Congress in Moscow in 2018, where Canada was awarded hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup, Davies reflected on the remarkable path that has followed.
“Definitely, it was all worth it.”
“I remember that 18-year-old kid not knowing what’s going on and why he’s going to Russia. Now he’s living the moment he always dreamed about.”
The Canadian captain said his younger self would have only one message.
“Enjoy every second of it. Enjoy every moment.”
While the celebrations after Canada’s historic qualification were understandable, Davies stressed that the team’s mindset has already shifted toward the next challenge.
Canada will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16, with head coach Jesse Marsch travelling to scout the potential opponents immediately after the victory.
Davies echoed his coach’s determination to embrace the challenge.
“The next preparation is total focus. Enjoy the win that we got today, but we know tomorrow it starts again.”
The winger acknowledged that every match becomes increasingly difficult from this point forward.
“Whichever team comes through, it’s going to be a good game. We know we’ll come up against tougher and tougher opponents as the tournament goes by.”
His closing message perfectly captured Canada’s mentality as they prepare for the biggest knockout match in the nation’s football history.
“Enjoy the moment now, but tomorrow, definitely full focus.”
Davies’ return provided another significant boost for a Canadian side already overflowing with confidence after making history on home soil. Having watched his teammates navigate the group stage without him, the captain is now back at the heart of Canada’s World Cup journey just as the tournament enters its most demanding phase.
With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, Davies believes Canada’s greatest achievement is not what they have already accomplished, but what they are still capable of achieving.
