TÜRKİYE EDGE CLOSER TO WORLD CUP — GÜLER INSPIRES 1-0 WIN, FINAL SHOWDOWN AWAITS

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Türkiye took a decisive step toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Romania in their European Qualifiers playoff semi-final.

The narrow win sends Türkiye into the decisive playoff final, where they will face the winner of the Slovakia vs. Kosovo clash for a coveted place at the World Cup.

In a tightly contested encounter, the breakthrough arrived early in the second half. Ferdi Kadıoğlu scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute, finishing off a brilliantly crafted move initiated by Arda Güler, whose vision and precision unlocked Romania’s defense.

Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Türkiye had to remain disciplined to protect their slender lead, with Romania unable to find a way back into the game.

With the victory, Türkiye now advances to the playoff final scheduled for March 31, where everything will be on the line.

Their opponent will be determined between Slovakia and Kosovo—two sides also battling for a historic opportunity to reach the global stage. The winner of this decisive tie will secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The team that emerges from this playoff path will join a World Cup group featuring, United States, Australia and Paraguay.

Türkiye, widely considered the strongest side remaining in the bracket, now stands just one match away from returning to football’s biggest stage.

Qualification would mark Türkiye’s first World Cup appearance since 2002—a tournament where they famously finished third, their best-ever performance. More than two decades later, the current generation is on the brink of writing a new chapter in the nation’s football history.
