With just 45 days until kickoff, uncertainty continues to surround the true cost of policing and security for the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in Vancouver, even as officials confirm the city will see its largest-ever security deployment.
The most recent estimate from the British Columbia government, released nearly a year ago, placed security costs at approximately $345 million. Since then, no updated figure has been made public, leaving questions over the final bill for hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Despite the financial ambiguity, authorities are clear on one point: the scale of security will be unprecedented.
Dave Jones, Vancouver’s head of safety and security for the tournament, said planning discussions indicate that policing levels on match days will surpass any previous deployment in the city’s history.
He pointed to the global magnitude of the event—expected to attract billions of viewers worldwide—as justification for the heightened measures, describing the tournament as one that demands exceptional preparation.
The operation will be led by the Vancouver Police Department, with significant support from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and additional law enforcement agencies from across Canada.
Officials say specialized units will be brought in, potentially from outside the province, to handle the complex security demands of the tournament, mirroring the multi-layered approach used during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Security coverage will extend beyond match venues to include team hotels, training facilities, and key public areas, reflecting concerns not only for players and officials but also for the expected surge in visitors.
### City Disruptions and Public Impact
The City of Vancouver has already confirmed major road closures around BC Place on match days, though officials insist efforts are being made to minimise disruption.
While most roads will remain accessible to pedestrians, vehicle access in certain zones will be restricted. Authorities have also indicated that businesses near the stadium are not expected to shut down, although access challenges could still arise.
Organisers say traffic management plans are being carefully designed to balance security needs with the daily functioning of the city.

Jones emphasised that the primary objective remains public safety, noting that the influx of tourists and global attention significantly raises the stakes.
Security planning, he said, is focused on ensuring safe movement around stadiums, protecting participating teams, and maintaining order across the city during the tournament.
As Vancouver counts down to hosting matches on football’s biggest stage, the scale of preparations is becoming clearer, but the final price tag for keeping the event secure remains a lingering mystery.
