Former Nigeria international midfielder Wasiu Ipaye has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to overcome Gabon in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff semi-final, scheduled for November 13 in Rabat, Morocco. However, he cautions that the team must not underestimate their opponents.
“I played in Gabon for many years. I know their football culture and that is why I strongly believe that the Super Eagles will overcome them if the manager selects his team on merit and current form,” Ipaye stated during a telephone interview. “Having said that, I want to appeal to the Eagles not to underrate their opponents because the Gabonese players are now exposed to European football. There’s no underdog in African football anymore.”
Ipaye, who had a successful stint with AS Sogara FC in Gabon, emphasized the importance of merit-based selection and current form in team selection. He also highlighted the need for the Super Eagles to remain focused and not be complacent.
Looking ahead, Ipaye expressed concern about a potential final clash with Cameroon, should Nigeria advance past Gabon. “I believe in approaching one game at a time, but I think the Super Eagles have a big hurdle to cross if they qualify to (potentially) play Cameroon in the final. I am really very scared of the Indomitable Lions because of the array of stars in the team,” he admitted.
Regarding the goalkeeping department, Ipaye advised Head Coach Eric Chelle to foster healthy competition. “Stanley Nwabali needs competition; it’s essential to give other goalkeepers the opportunity to fight for the number one jersey,” he suggested.
Coach Eric Chelle has announced a 24-man squad for the playoff, featuring key players such as Victor Osimhen, William Troost-Ekong, and Wilfred Ndidi. The team will assemble in Rabat on November 10 to commence preparations for the crucial encounter.
The winner of the Nigeria vs. Gabon match will face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final, with the victor securing a spot in the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March 2026.
As the Super Eagles gear up for this high-stakes fixture, Ipaye’s insights serve as both encouragement and a cautionary note, emphasizing the need for focus, merit-based selection, and preparedness.
