Troost-Ekong: “Once Resolution Is Found, We Will Be the First to Confirm” as Super Eagles Boycott Training Over Unpaid Bonuses

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have boycotted training sessions in Rabat, Morocco, just two days before their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff match against Gabon. The protest stems from unresolved issues regarding unpaid bonuses and allowances, some dating back to 2019.

BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the entire squad, including officials, refused to train on Tuesday due to unresolved issues with outstanding payments.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong addressed the situation, stating “Once resolution is found we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement/claim or especially demands other than the rightful request written about below is FALSE. All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to release an official statement regarding the boycott. The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Gabon in the World Cup playoff on Thursday. The outcome of this match is pivotal for Nigeria’s aspirations to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about player welfare and administrative accountability within Nigerian football. Fans and stakeholders alike are hopeful for a swift resolution to ensure the team’s focus returns to securing World Cup qualification.

This is a developing story; updates will follow as more information becomes available.
