Amad’s Late Strike Sends Ivory Coast Past Ecuador in Dramatic World Cup Opener

Substitute Amad Diallo emerged as Côte d’Ivoire’s hero with a dramatic 90th-minute winner as the African champions defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a fiercely contested Group E opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The victory gave the Elephants a dream start to their first World Cup campaign since 2014 and ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run.

For much of the evening, the contest appeared destined for a stalemate. Ecuador started brightly and came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, with both John Yeboah and Alan Minda striking the crossbar during a spell of sustained South American pressure.

Ivory Coast responded with attacking intent of their own. Elye Wahi rattled the woodwork as the African side gradually settled into the match, while teenage sensation Yan Diomande repeatedly troubled Ecuador’s defense with his pace, creativity and fearless dribbling. The 19-year-old was one of the standout performers on the pitch and played a key role in shifting momentum toward the Elephants.

As the match entered its closing stages, Ecuador looked increasingly comfortable with a point. However, Ivory Coast continued to push forward in search of a breakthrough, encouraged by coach Emerse Faé’s attacking philosophy and the confidence gained from impressive pre-tournament victories over France, Scotland and South Korea.

The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute. Defender Wilfried Singo surged forward from the right flank and delivered a precise ball into the path of Diallo. The Manchester United winger, introduced from the bench in the second half, took one touch before calmly guiding his finish beyond goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez and into the far corner.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters, sealing what was also the nation’s first World Cup victory over South American opposition.

After the match, coach Emerse Faé praised his side’s mentality and determination.

“We are going to play to win,” Faé had said before the tournament, and his players delivered on that ambition with a performance that combined resilience and patience against one of South America’s toughest defensive teams.

The result leaves Ivory Coast level on points with Germany in Group E after the Europeans’ emphatic victory over Curaçao, setting up a mouth-watering showdown between the two group leaders in the next round of fixtures.

For the Elephants, it was a statement victory—one that reinforced their belief that they can finally reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history.
