Romelu Lukaku Applauds Senegal as one of the World Cup’s best teams after Belgium’s dramatic comeback

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has paid a glowing tribute to Senegal following his side’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, describing the Teranga Lions as one of the strongest teams at the tournament despite their heartbreaking elimination.

Belgium looked to be heading out of the competition after falling 2-0 behind against Senegal, who dominated large spells of the contest through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr. However, Lukaku inspired a remarkable late comeback, pulling a goal back before Youri Tielemans equalised in stoppage time and later converted a VAR-awarded penalty in the 125th minute to send Belgium into the Round of 16. Reuters described the victory as one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout-stage comebacks.

Despite ending Senegal’s World Cup dream, Lukaku was full of admiration for the African side and insisted they were among the elite teams at the competition.

“Senegal is truly one of the best teams in this tournament. Technically, physically, and tactically. But our team spirit has come to the fore, as has the intensity.”

The Belgian forward’s comments contrasted sharply with the criticism directed at Senegal in the aftermath of the defeat. Head coach Pape Thiaw admitted his team retreated after taking a two-goal lead, while winger Krépin Diatta acknowledged that the squad “lacked character” in the closing stages. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia also suggested his side anticipated Senegal would become increasingly defensive, a tactical shift he described as a “serious mistake.” Together, the reactions have fuelled intense debate over how Senegal allowed a commanding position to slip away.

Lukaku, who once again made a decisive impact after coming off the bench, also reflected on his habit of delivering in crucial moments. The 33-year-old, Belgium’s all-time leading scorer, became emotional as he spoke about the personal inspiration behind his performances.

“The fact that I keep turning things around when I come on? I think my father is helping me from above.”

His father, Roger Lukaku, was a former professional footballer who represented Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) before passing away in 2005. Romelu has frequently spoken about the influence his father had on his career and has often dedicated significant moments in football to his memory.

Lukaku’s latest contribution further enhanced his reputation as one of international football’s most decisive forwards. His goal shifted the momentum of the match, setting the stage for Belgium’s extraordinary comeback after Senegal had appeared on course for a famous victory.

While Belgium celebrated an unlikely passage into the Round of 16, Lukaku’s generous assessment of Senegal served as recognition of the quality the Teranga Lions displayed for much of the contest. Ultimately, however, Belgium’s resilience and belief proved decisive, ending Senegal’s World Cup campaign in one of the tournament’s most unforgettable encounters.
