Harry Kane: ‘Everything was against us’ as England edge Mexico to reach World Cup quarter-finals

England captain Harry Kane praised his side’s resilience and fighting spirit after the Three Lions survived a dramatic late onslaught to defeat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a match filled with momentum swings, record-breaking moments and high drama, England appeared to be cruising after Jude Bellingham’s rapid-fire first-half brace and Kane’s second-half penalty put Thomas Tuchel’s side 3-1 ahead. However, a red card for defender Jarell Quansah and a penalty converted by Raúl Jiménez transformed the closing stages into a tense battle for survival before England eventually held on to book a last-eight meeting with Norway.

Reflecting on the victory, Kane acknowledged the enormous challenge his team faced against an inspired Mexican side backed by a passionate home crowd.

“It was a crazy game. We had to fight for every ball. Everything was against us, but we managed it.”

The Bayern Munich striker’s comments captured the nature of an extraordinary Round of 16 encounter, where England not only had to withstand Mexico’s relentless attacking pressure but also navigate the final stages with ten men after Quansah’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Jesús Gallardo.

Kane once again played a decisive role, calmly converting a 60th-minute penalty to restore England’s two-goal advantage after Julián Quiñones had pulled one back before halftime. The goal continued the captain’s remarkable goalscoring campaign, taking his tally to 73 goals in all competitions this season, while also moving him to 21 goals in major international tournaments—the second-highest total by a European player, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite Kane’s milestone, it was Jude Bellingham who stole the headlines with his historic contribution. The Real Madrid midfielder scored twice in just 98 seconds, recording the third-fastest brace in FIFA World Cup history and becoming the first England player since Gary Lineker in 1986 to score twice in a World Cup Round of 16 match.

Mexico refused to let their tournament end quietly. Quiñones’ first-half strike and Jiménez’s penalty after Quansah’s sending-off ensured the co-hosts pushed England until the final whistle, with El Tri creating several dangerous moments as they searched desperately for an equaliser.

Kane admitted that England had to dig deeper than at any previous point in the tournament, highlighting the collective determination that ultimately secured progression.

The victory reinforced England’s credentials as genuine contenders for the World Cup title, not only because of their attacking quality but also because of the composure they showed under sustained pressure in one of the tournament’s most hostile atmospheres.

England now turn their attention to a blockbuster quarter-final against Erling Haaland’s Norway, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

For Kane, the dramatic triumph over Mexico demonstrated an attribute that often defines championship-winning teams. Talent may have given England the lead, but resilience preserved it. As the captain summed up after the final whistle, England had to battle through adversity, and when “everything was against” them, they still found a way to win.
