Argentina’s Stunning Comeback Sinks England, Sets Up World Cup Final Against Spain

Messi inspires late revival as Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez overturn England’s lead to send holders into a second straight World Cup final

Defending champions Argentina produced another breathtaking comeback to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday night, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Spain after two dramatic late goals stunned the Three Lions in Atlanta.

England looked destined to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 after controlling much of the contest and finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

Anthony Gordon finished brilliantly after meeting Morgan Rogers’ inviting cross, capping a dominant spell from Thomas Tuchel’s side and sending England supporters into celebration.

For much of the evening, England frustrated Lionel Messi and Argentina with disciplined defending and aggressive pressing, limiting the South Americans to few clear-cut opportunities.

But champions rarely surrender quietly. As they had already demonstrated earlier in the tournament against Cabo Verde, Egypt and Switzerland, Lionel Scaloni’s side refused to accept defeat.

Their belief never disappeared. Instead, it intensified. The breakthrough finally came in the closing stages when Messi delivered another moment of inspiration. Following sustained Argentine pressure, Enzo Fernández fired home from outside the area in the 85th minute to level the contest and completely alter the momentum.

England, who had looked composed for more than 80 minutes, suddenly found themselves under relentless pressure.

Then came the decisive blow. Deep into stoppage time, Messi produced another telling contribution, delivering a cross that eventually found substitute Lautaro Martínez, who headed home in the 90+2nd minute to complete one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament.

The victory sends Argentina into consecutive FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in the nation’s history. It will also mark Argentina’s seventh appearance in a World Cup final, moving them second on the all-time list behind Germany’s eight appearances.

Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s final, reviving memories of the 2022 Finalissima, when Lionel Messi inspired the Albiceleste to victory over the European champions.

For England, the defeat extends decades of World Cup frustration despite another impressive campaign under Thomas Tuchel. For Argentina, the dream of retaining the FIFA World Cup remains alive.
