AFCON 2025: Chelle Keeps Focus Sharp, Downplays Expectations Ahead of Algeria Clash

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle maintained a calm and measured tone at Friday’s press conference ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter‑final against Algeria in Marrakech, emphasizing preparation and game‑by‑game focus amid mounting expectations from fans and media.

Chelle stressed that despite Nigeria’s impressive run to the knockout stage, highlighted by a commanding 4–0 win over Mozambique, he is determined not to look too far ahead in the competition. “We aren’t thinking about anything beyond this match,” the Malian coach said. “Our attention is fully on tactics, training, and doing our job against Algeria.”

When asked about the Super Eagles’ potential to challenge for the title, Chelle reiterated that expectations must be matched by performance on the pitch rather than off‑field speculation. “I’ve said it before: this is a new game, a new challenge,” he added, pushing back against talk of Nigeria being title favourites and urging his squad to approach the contest with humility and discipline.

The coach highlighted the importance of team unity, tactical readiness, and calm mental focus, especially as the tournament progresses into its most demanding stage. He reaffirmed his belief that learned lessons from earlier matches will help the team navigate tough moments against top‑flight opponents like Algeria.

Chelle’s remarks matched sentiments shared by key players earlier in the week about the collective mindset in camp, which remains locked in on the immediate task rather than external pressures or predictions.

The Super Eagles and Algeria now prepare for Saturday’s match at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, with tactical preparation and psychological readiness clearly high on Chelle’s agenda as Nigeria chases a place in the AFCON semi‑finals.
