AFCON 2025: Mahrez Acknowledges Pressure, Aims High Ahead of Nigeria Quarter‑Final Clash

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has openly acknowledged the pressure on his side to deliver and expressed his ambition to lead the Desert Foxes to victory as they prepare to face Nigeria in their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter‑final in Marrakech this Saturday.

Addressing the media at a pre‑match press conference, Mahrez highlighted the significance of the fixture and the expectations resting on Algeria’s shoulders as one of the tournament’s elite sides.

“There is pressure at home for us to win the game,” Mahrez said, underlining the intense national and fan expectations that accompany Algeria’s quest for continental glory. “Obviously both teams want to go through, but only the best team tomorrow can, and I hope it’s us.”

Mahrez, one of Africa’s most experienced and decorated players, also hinted at the personal significance of the tournament to him. While stopping short of making definitive commitments about his international future, he suggested that this AFCON could be his last*, adding emotional weight to Algeria’s campaign.

“I think this will be my last AFCON,” he remarked. “I don’t want to pressure myself but it will be great to win the trophy for our country.”

Nigeria and Algeria are set to renew one of Africa’s most competitive rivalries, with both sides carrying strong form into the quarter‑final stage. Algeria advanced after a narrow extra‑time win over DR Congo, while Nigeria secured a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.

The match is expected to be a tactical and emotionally charged encounter, pitting Algeria’s resilience and continental experience against Nigeria’s flair and attacking firepower.
