AFCON Fallout: CAF Hands Algeria Heavy Bans and $100,000 Fine After Nigeria Defeat

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned the Algerian national football team and its players following a series of incidents that followed their quarter-final defeat to Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The measures, announced by the CAF Disciplinary Board and confirmed by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), include player suspensions and substantial financial penalties in connection with misconduct by players, officials and supporters.

In sporting sanctions, goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, and defender Rafik Belghali has been handed a four-match ban  of which two are suspended. These suspensions will take effect during the qualifying campaign for AFCON 2027.

CAF imposed a total fine of USD 100,000 on the FAF for a range of disciplinary breaches: $5,000 for improper conduct by the team, linked to accumulation of yellow and red cards; $25,000 for inappropriate behaviour by players and officials following the match; $5,000 for the use of flares by supporters; $5,000 for spectators throwing objects; $10,000 for failure to respect security regulations; $50,000 for offensive gestures directed at match officials.

The penalties follow chaotic scenes at the end of Algeria’s 2–0 loss to the Super Eagles on January 10, when players and officials confronted the refereeing team, and some supporters were involved in disorderly conduct, including lighting flares and attempting to breach security barriers. CAF described the actions as serious breaches of its disciplinary and safety regulations.

In response to the sanctions, the Algerian Football Federation confirmed that it has filed an immediate appeal with CAF’s Appeals Committee, contesting both the sporting suspensions and financial fines as part of its efforts to defend the interests of Algerian football.

The outcome of the appeal will determine whether the sanctions are upheld, reduced or overturned as Algeria prepares for upcoming international competitions, including AFCON 2027 qualification.

CAF’s decision underscores its continuing emphasis on discipline and respect for officials, players and match safety at major continental championships.
