In a dramatic conclusion to Group C at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s Super Eagles maintained their perfect record with a 3–1 victory over Uganda, a match marked by Uganda’s unprecedented use of three goalkeepers.
Paul Onuachu opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a precise assist from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The Super Eagles dominated the first half, with Uganda struggling to find their footing.
The second half saw further dominance from Nigeria. Raphael Onyedika netted twice in quick succession, in the 62nd and 67th minutes, effectively sealing the win for the Super Eagles.
Uganda’s troubles were compounded by a series of unfortunate events involving their goalkeepers. Starting keeper Denis Onyango sustained an ankle injury and was substituted at halftime. His replacement, Salim Jamal Magoola, was sent off just 11 minutes later for handling the ball outside the penalty area. Third-choice goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi was then brought on, but he quickly conceded two goals to Onyedika.
Despite a late consolation goal from Rogers Mato in the 75th minute, Uganda couldn’t recover. The Cranes’ use of all three goalkeepers in a single match was a rare occurrence and highlighted the team’s challenges in the tournament.
Nigeria’s victory ensured they topped Group C with nine points, advancing to the knockout stages with confidence. Uganda, on the other hand, was eliminated from the tournament, finishing at the bottom of the group.
