Nigerian midfielder Alhassan Yusuf delivered the performance of his career on Wednesday night, scoring all three goals as New England Revolution defeated D.C. United 3-0 in Washington.
The hat-trick was the first of Yusuf’s professional career and made him only the eighth player in New England Revolution history to score three goals in an MLS regular-season match. He is also the club’s first hat-trick scorer since Kei Kamara achieved the feat on September 2, 2017.
Yusuf opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, heading home after Jack Harrison’s delivery was redirected across the box by Peyton Miller. The Nigerian doubled the advantage shortly before half-time, finishing another Harrison cross to put the Revolution 2-0 ahead.
The 25-year-old completed his treble in the 66th minute, again rising to meet a Harrison cross and heading past D.C. United goalkeeper Sean Johnson. Harrison consequently registered assists on all three goals in a remarkable attacking display..
The landmark performance also earned Yusuf MLS Player of the Matchday honours, while his five goals in 2026 represent a new single-season high for the Nigerian midfielder.
The victory ended New England’s three-game winless run and strengthened its position in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points.
For Yusuf, who joined New England from Belgian side Royal Antwerp in 2024 and has represented Nigeria at senior level, the night marked a spectacular breakthrough in his MLS career.
