Ghana international Thomas Partey has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab, with the club unveiling the experienced midfielder to its supporters in a presentation video that has already generated significant attention online.
Al Shabab confirmed the signing on Friday, August 21, announcing the 33-year-old on a one-year contract after he became a free agent following the expiry of his deal with Spanish club Villarreal. The Saudi club presented the arrival with the message, “A global star illuminates the north of the capital.”
The club’s presentation has also fuelled the playful social-media description of Partey as Al Shabab’s “new admin”, a reference to the Ghanaian’s arrival and his new role within the club rather than an actual administrative appointment. The club’s official social-media announcement confirms that he is joining the playing squad.
Partey arrived in Riyadh on Thursday and underwent his medical examination before the transfer was formally completed. Reports from Saudi media indicate that he successfully passed the medical, clearing the final hurdle for his move to the Riyadh-based club.
The move brings an end to Partey’s brief spell at Villarreal, where he made 32 appearances across competitions during the 2025/26 season. Before moving to Spain, the midfielder spent five seasons at Arsenal after establishing himself at Atlético Madrid, where he developed into one of Europe’s recognised defensive midfielders.
For Al Shabab, Partey’s arrival adds considerable experience to a midfield that the club is seeking to strengthen. The Ghanaian has played at the highest level in Spain and England and has extensive Champions League and international experience. He is also expected to bring leadership to a side looking to improve its fortunes in the Saudi Pro League.
Partey now begins his first chapter in Saudi football after more than a decade in European football. He is expected to wear No. 18 for Al Shabab.
