Panathinaikos striker Cyriel Dessers has expressed immense pride and gratitude upon his inclusion in Nigeria’s 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. In a recent interview, Dessers shared his long-held aspiration to represent the Super Eagles on such a prestigious stage.
“It’s been a dream for many years to go to a big tournament with the Super Eagles,” Dessers stated. “There have been a lot of quality strikers in the past years and even now, so many Nigerian strikers are doing well all over Europe and Africa, so I take pride in being here.”
Dessers attributes his selection to consistent performances over recent years. His journey with the national team has seen ups and downs, including a period of exclusion following underwhelming World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa. However, his resurgence, marked by a goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana at the 2025 Unity Cup, caught the attention of head coach Eric Chelle.
Now, as Nigeria prepares for its AFCON opener against Tanzania, Dessers is poised to contribute significantly to the team’s campaign. His inclusion adds depth to a forward line already featuring talents like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
