Former France international Patrice Evra has strongly decried the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to award the AFCON 2025 title to Morocco, calling the ruling a “disgrace and a scandal for African football.”
Speaking publicly following the controversial verdict, Evra insisted the outcome contradicted what was seen on the pitch, openly supporting Senegal as the rightful winners.
“This is a disgrace for African football. A scandal. We all saw it with our own eyes — Senegal won,” Evra stated.
He added: “The Africa Cup of Nations has really lost all its credibility. When I got the notification, I thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Nothing surprises me anymore in football.”
The CAF Appeal Board ruled that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON 2025 final, awarding a 3–0 victory and the continental crown to Morocco under Articles 82 and 84 of the tournament regulations.
The unprecedented decision—coming after Senegal had appeared to win the match—has provoked widespread criticism from players, pundits, and fans alike, igniting a debate over fairness, transparency, and governance in African football.
Evra did not hold back, suggesting the ruling has undermined the integrity of Africa’s premier football competition.
“My Moroccan brothers, I like you, but come on… don’t take it too far,” he said. “Nothing surprises me anymore in football, and that’s why I watch it less — because decisions like this are a scandal.”
The controversy is set to escalate as the Senegal Football Federation prepares to challenge the CAF ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, where a final, binding verdict will determine the ultimate fate of the AFCON 2025 title.
With attention from global football figures like Evra, the dispute has moved beyond Africa, shining a spotlight on governance, accountability, and credibility** in continental football competitions.
As the case heads to CAS, all eyes will remain on the unfolding drama over who truly deserves to be crowned African champions.
