Nigeria’s Flamingos have shattered a historic barrier in African women’s football, becoming the first team from the continent to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a sensational 3-1 victory over Brazil in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters sealed the landmark achievement on Wednesday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, delivering a commanding second-half performance to secure their maiden appearance in the tournament’s final.
Following a goalless opening half, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute before Awawu Bashiru took centre stage with a brace in the 71st and 80th minutes.
Brazil’s Greise Kelly pulled one back in the 89th minute, but the late consolation could not derail Nigeria’s historic march into the final.
The victory represents a breakthrough for African football, with the continent’s previous best performances in the competition ending in third-place finishes. Ghana claimed bronze in 2012, while Nigeria finished third in 2022.
The Flamingos’ remarkable journey has also earned recognition from Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe, who congratulated the team for making Africa proud.
Nigeria will now face Japan in Saturday’s final, scheduled for November 7, with the opportunity to become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The historic qualification marks a defining moment for Nigeria’s youth women’s football and places the Flamingos one victory away from an unprecedented global triumph.
