GFA’s Henry Asante Twum Defends Black Stars’ Technical Team Ahead of World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has publicly defended its decision to strengthen the Black Stars’ technical team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Communications Director Henry Asante Twum stressing that quality expertise, not numbers, will drive the team’s success. The comments were made during an interview with local Ghanaian media, Akoma FM, following recent appointments to the senior men’s team’s backroom staff.

“Our goal at the World Cup is to make an impact, and we can only achieve that with the best expertise guiding us,” Twum said, highlighting the strategic intent behind the GFA’s moves. “We believe these coaches will take us where we want to be.”

The expansion of the technical team, which includes additions such as Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, Alain Ravera, Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso, Carlos Lozano Romero and Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi, has drawn both support and criticism from fans and commentators.

Twum also addressed public concerns about the cost and size of the new technical staff, stressing that Ghana’s coaching contingent is actually smaller than those of many competing nations. “When you compare the coaches we have assembled with those of other countries, ours are even fewer in number. This is not about increasing the headcount, but about ensuring we put forward the very best to compete at the highest level’s .

Responding to critics who have described the appointments as wasteful, Twum pushed back, emphasising that such criticism is unfounded and that the association’s priority is the team’s performance. “It is unfortunate for anyone to describe this as a waste of money. That has never been the goal of the FA, and in time, everyone will testify to the impact these additions will have on our progress,” he said.

Ghana’s Black Stars are preparing for the 2026 World Cup in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, with their campaign set to kick off on June 17, 2026, against Panama in Toronto.
