English forward closes in on move to Turkey after breakthrough at Marseille, with Manchester United benefiting from lucrative sell-on clause
English forward Mason Greenwood is on the verge of joining Turkish giants Fenerbahçe after the club reached a full agreement with Olympique Marseille over a transfer worth €40 million plus €2 million in performance-related add-ons, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 24-year-old is expected to sign a contract running until June 2030, bringing an end to his two-year spell in Ligue 1.
The move also represents a significant financial boost for Manchester United, who negotiated a substantial sell-on clause when Greenwood was sold to Marseille in 2024. As a result, the Premier League club are expected to receive more than €10 million from the transfer.
Greenwood leaves Marseille after re-establishing himself as one of Europe’s most productive attacking players. Since arriving from Manchester United, he scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances, becoming one of the standout performers in Ligue 1 while attracting interest from clubs across Europe and the Middle East.
Fenerbahçe accelerated negotiations in recent days after identifying Greenwood as a priority signing for their attack. Despite reported interest from AS Roma, Atlético Madrid and Saudi Pro League clubs, the Turkish side won the race by agreeing both the transfer fee with Marseille and personal terms with the player.
According to reports, Greenwood will earn around €10 million net per season in Istanbul as he prepares for a new challenge under Fenerbahçe, who are aiming to reclaim the Turkish Süper Lig title and make a strong return to the UEFA Champions League.
Marseille’s decision to cash in on Greenwood comes amid ongoing efforts to balance the club’s finances following UEFA sanctions for breaching financial sustainability regulations. The transfer provides a substantial injection of funds as the French club reshapes its squad ahead of the new campaign.
For Manchester United, the deal closes another chapter in Greenwood’s association with the club while delivering an unexpected financial windfall that could support further recruitment during the summer transfer window.
With only the formalities remaining, Greenwood is expected to undergo a medical before completing his switch to Istanbul, where Fenerbahçe hope his goalscoring ability can help end their wait for domestic league glory and strengthen their ambitions in European competition.
