Haaland Sends Norway Into Round of 16 as Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup Dream Ends

Erling Haaland delivered once again on football’s biggest stage, scoring a late winner to fire Norway into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire, ending the Elephants’ historic campaign and setting up a blockbuster meeting with Brazil.

Played at Dallas Stadium, the Round of 32 contest appeared destined for extra time after substitute Amad Diallo cancelled out Antonio Nusa’s first-half opener with just six minutes remaining. However, Haaland struck in the 86th minute, calmly finishing from Patrick Berg’s cutback to seal Norway’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.

Norway had taken control before halftime when 20-year-old Antonio Nusa curled a superb effort into the top corner in the 39th minute after cutting inside from the left. The RB Leipzig winger’s strike rewarded Norway’s patient approach after both sides traded early chances in a tense opening period.

Côte d’Ivoire responded with renewed urgency after the break. Head coach Emerse Faé introduced Amad Diallo from the bench, and the Manchester United winger transformed the contest. After previously making a crucial goal-line clearance to keep his side alive, Diallo equalised in the 84th minute with a composed finish, seemingly rescuing the African champions and forcing Norway onto the back foot.

But Norway’s talisman had the final word. As three Ivorian defenders converged on Patrick Berg inside the penalty area, the midfielder squared the ball to an unmarked Haaland, who swept home his fifth goal of the tournament to restore Norway’s lead and send the Scandinavian supporters into celebration.

The victory marks another milestone for Norwegian football. Appearing at their first World Cup since France 1998, Ståle Solbakken’s side have now recorded the nation’s first-ever knockout-stage win and will face five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 16 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat brings an emotional end to a memorable tournament. The Elephants reached the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history and pushed Norway to the limit before Haaland’s late intervention denied them another famous chapter. Coach Emerse Faé praised his players’ commitment afterwards, describing the tournament as an important learning experience despite the painful exit.
