The participation of the Iran national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains intact for now, despite growing speculation that geopolitical tensions could disrupt the country’s involvement in the global tournament.
Officials from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have confirmed that they have not received any formal notification from Iran regarding a withdrawal from the competition. AFC Secretary General Windsor John stated that the Iranian football federation has so far reaffirmed its commitment to participate.
“Ultimately, it is up to the federation to decide on their participation, and so far they have confirmed to us that they will take part in the World Cup,” John said, according to reports by European media. “They are members of our federation and we want to see them play. They qualified, and we hope they resolve their issues and will be able to participate.”
Iran successfully secured qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament and is currently expected to compete when the competition kicks off across the United States**, **Mexico, and Canada in 2026.
However, uncertainty surrounding the team’s participation intensified after Iranian authorities suggested that the country’s current political and security climate could complicate their ability to play matches in the United States.
Reports indicate that Iranian officials have proposed an alternative arrangement to FIFA, requesting that their group-stage fixtures be held in Mexico rather than in the United States, where some of their matches were initially expected to take place.
The request reportedly aims to ease diplomatic and logistical concerns while allowing the team to remain in the tournament.
So far, FIFA has not publicly commented on whether such a request would be considered or implemented, leaving the situation unresolved as preparations continue for the historic tournament.
The 2026 edition will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, making it the largest in the competition’s history and the first to be jointly hosted by three nations.
For now, the Iranian national team remains part of the tournament lineup, though discussions surrounding venue logistics and broader geopolitical developments could still influence the final arrangements for their participation.
