Lookman Strike Sends Atlético Past Barcelona Despite Yamal, Torres Goals

UEFA Champions League quarter-final drama unfolded at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano as Atlético Madrid edged past FC Barcelona on aggregate despite losing 2–1 on the night. A decisive first-half goal from Ademola Lookman ensured Diego Simeone’s side advanced to the semi-finals with a 3–2 aggregate victory after their 2–0 first-leg win.

Barcelona made a blistering start as teenage sensation Lamine Yamal struck just four minutes into the contest, igniting hopes of a comeback. The goal came after a defensive error from Clément Lenglet, with Ferran Torres helping the winger capitalise to beat goalkeeper Juan Musso. The strike was Barcelona’s fastest goal in a Champions League knockout match since Lionel Messi scored against Chelsea FC in the third minute back in March 2018.

With momentum firmly on their side, Barcelona doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute through Ferran Torres. Dani Olmo threaded a clever pass into the box and Torres showed composure, controlling the ball before firing past Musso from a tight angle to make it 2–0 on the night and level the tie on aggregate.

The visitors nearly turned the tie completely in their favour moments later when Fermín López rose to meet a cross, only for Musso to produce a crucial save. The chance came in a frenetic spell in which Barcelona dominated possession and looked capable of overturning the deficit entirely.

However, Atlético responded with the resilience that has defined Simeone’s side. In the 31st minute, a swift counterattack down the right flank changed the complexion of the tie. Marcos Llorente surged forward before delivering a precise cross into the area where Lookman arrived at the far post to finish, pulling one back to make it 2–1 on the night and restoring Atlético’s aggregate lead at 3–2.

The remainder of the match saw Barcelona push relentlessly for the goal that would force extra time. Atlético, though, grew stronger defensively after the break, limiting clear chances while threatening sporadically on the counter. Lookman almost struck again, while Robin Le Normand also went close during a period when the hosts gained control.

Barcelona’s task became even more difficult late in the game when defender Eric García was sent off following a VAR review for a last-man foul on Alexander Sørloth. Reduced to ten men, the Catalans continued to press but could not find the equaliser that would have revived their hopes.

When the final whistle sounded, Barcelona had secured a 2–1 victory on the night but fell short in the tie overall, with Atlético progressing to the semi-finals thanks to their 3–2 aggregate triumph. The result underlined Atlético’s tactical discipline and the decisive impact of Lookman’s strike in one of the competition’s most intense quarter-final clashes
