Lookman Strikes First but Vinícius Double Fires Real Madrid Past Atlético in Bernabéu Thriller

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Real Madrid staged a dramatic comeback to defeat city rivals Atlético Madrid 3-2 in a pulsating La Liga derby at the Santiago Bernabéu, despite an early breakthrough from Ademola Lookman.

The Nigerian forward opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing off a slick attacking move involving Matteo Ruggeri and Giuliano Simeone to stun the home crowd and hand Atlético a deserved first-half lead.

Atlético Madrid executed their game plan effectively in the first half, with Lookman’s intelligent movement and pace troubling Madrid’s defensive line. His opener capped a well-worked team move and reinforced his growing influence since arriving in Spain.

The visitors could have extended their lead, but Real Madrid gradually found rhythm, setting the stage for a dramatic turnaround after the break.

Real Madrid emerged transformed in the second half. Vinícius Júnior equalised from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, shifting momentum decisively in favour of the hosts.

Just three minutes later, Federico Valverde capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire Madrid into the lead, completing a rapid turnaround that left Atlético reeling.

Atlético refused to fold, and Nahuel Molina produced a stunning long-range strike in the 66th minute to level the contest once again.

But Vinícius proved decisive, restoring Madrid’s lead in the 72nd minute*with a brilliant individual effort, his second of the night, to ultimately settle the contest.

The closing stages were filled with tension as Real Madrid were reduced to ten men following Valverde’s late red card, inviting heavy pressure from Atlético.

Atlético came agonisingly close to snatching a point, with Julián Álvarez hitting the post, but Madrid held firm to secure a crucial victory in the title race.
