Mateta Takes Crystal Palace Contract Fight to FIFA in Bid to Challenge Final Year

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has launched a formal challenge over the validity of the final 10 months of his contract, taking the dispute to FIFA after an earlier independent tribunal process under Premier League rules. His current agreement is understood to run until June 2027.

The 29-year-old is contesting a 12-month extension that Crystal Palace activated in 2024. Mateta’s position is that the additional year should not be valid, potentially allowing him to leave the club as a free agent earlier than Palace’s stated contract expiry.

Mateta originally joined Palace from Mainz 05 in January 2021 on loan before completing a permanent transfer in January 2022. His permanent deal was for four and a half years and included an option for a further 12 months, which Palace subsequently exercised.

The contractual dispute had already been considered by an independent tribunal operating under Premier League rules, with the process reportedly not going in Mateta’s favour. Despite his challenge, Palace continue to regard the agreement as binding through June 2027.

The matter has now reached FIFA, although reporting indicates that the world governing body’s position is that the dispute falls outside its jurisdiction. FIFA’s own regulations confirm that its Football Tribunal has specific jurisdiction over employment-related disputes with an international dimension, meaning jurisdiction depends on the precise circumstances of a case.

The dispute comes amid continued uncertainty over Mateta’s future. The France international has reportedly attracted interest from other clubs and came close to leaving Palace previously, while remaining an important member of the squad.

Despite the legal battle, Mateta remains a Crystal Palace player and his contract currently stands until June 2027. Any change to that position would depend on the outcome of the contractual proceedings or a separate agreement between the player and the club.
