Pape Gueye puts Senegal future on hold after World Cup heartbreak, deepening crisis around Pape Thiaw’s coaching staff

Senegal’s turbulent FIFA World Cup campaign has taken another dramatic turn after midfielder Pape Gueye announced he will no longer represent the national team while the current coaching staff remains in charge, a decision that has intensified scrutiny of head coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions’ painful elimination by Belgium.

In a strongly worded message posted on Instagram hours after Senegal’s 3-2 extra-time defeat, Gueye revealed that he intends to speak publicly about the reasons behind the team’s disappointing campaign but first wanted to make his position on the coaching staff unmistakably clear.

“I will come back later to talk about the reasons for the elimination. But today I am announcing that as long as this coaching staff remains in place, I will stop playing for the national team.”

The statement represents the most significant public sign yet of internal unrest within the Senegal camp and raises fresh questions about the future of Thiaw, who has come under intense criticism following one of the most painful defeats in the country’s football history.

Senegal looked destined for the Round of 16 after Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr established a 2-0 lead against Belgium. However, Romelu Lukaku sparked a remarkable comeback before Youri Tielemans equalised in the closing minutes of normal time. The Aston Villa midfielder then converted a controversial VAR-awarded penalty in the 125th minute after substitute Lamine Camara was adjudged to have committed a foul, completing Belgium’s dramatic turnaround.

Ironically, Gueye had been one of Senegal’s standout performers during the tournament. The Villarreal midfielder scored twice in the emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq that secured Senegal’s place in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. Against Belgium, however, he was substituted shortly after the hour mark as Thiaw attempted to protect his side’s two-goal advantage—a tactical decision that has since become one of the major talking points in Senegal’s post-mortem.

Gueye did not directly name Thiaw in his Instagram post, but his reference to the “current coaching staff” leaves little doubt that his frustration extends beyond a single match. Reuters reports that his announcement comes amid growing divisions surrounding the national team, with Thiaw’s leadership increasingly being questioned following both the World Cup exit and earlier controversies during the Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The midfielder’s decision also lends weight to reports that Senegal’s disappointing World Cup campaign was affected by deeper organisational and management problems. French newspaper L’Équipe previously reported a series of off-field issues, including delayed contractual matters, logistical shortcomings, staffing concerns and questionable preparation before the tournament, all of which reportedly contributed to growing frustration within the squad.

Following the defeat, Senegalese media launched scathing criticism of Thiaw, with publications including Le Soleil, Yoor-Yoor, Wiwsport, Rewmi Sports and Walf Quotidien accusing the coach of tactical failures and poor game management after his side surrendered a seemingly unassailable lead.

Gueye’s public declaration now threatens to turn criticism into a full-blown crisis. At 27, the midfielder remains one of Senegal’s most influential players, and his decision to step away from international football could have significant implications ahead of upcoming international competitions if the impasse is not resolved.

Whether Gueye eventually returns may depend less on the passage of time than on decisions made by the Senegalese Football Federation in the aftermath of a World Cup campaign that promised so much but ended in disappointment. His promise to later reveal the reasons behind Senegal’s elimination suggests that the full story behind the Teranga Lions’ collapse may not yet have emerged.
