Paraguay Erupts in World Cup Fever as Thousands Unite for Emotional Send-Off

Paraguay’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup has ignited scenes of national unity rarely witnessed in recent years, with thousands of supporters flooding the streets of Asunción and packing the iconic Defensores del Chaco Stadium to bid farewell to La Albirroja before their departure for the 2026 tournament in North America.

The farewell celebration culminated in Paraguay’s final home friendly against Nicaragua, with the 35,000-capacity Defensores del Chaco filled to capacity as supporters created a spectacular atmosphere featuring giant mosaics, flags, fireworks and choreographed displays. One of the most striking tributes inside the stadium carried the message “La Albirroja de Todos” (“The Red-and-White Team of Everyone”), symbolizing the national unity behind Gustavo Alfaro’s squad.

The scenes reflected the enormous excitement surrounding Paraguay’s return to the World Cup after a 16-year absence. The South Americans last appeared at the global finals in South Africa in 2010, where they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain.

Across the country, World Cup fever has spread beyond football stadiums. Paraguayan media reported streets decorated in national colours, while fans of all ages embraced the occasion with jerseys, flags, hats and face paint as the nation prepared to send off its team. The atmosphere has transformed the World Cup into a nationwide celebration extending far beyond the national squad itself.

Authorities also launched one of the largest security operations in recent memory to accommodate the massive crowds expected at the farewell event. More than 4,000 police officers were deployed to protect supporters, the team and stadium surroundings as Paraguayans gathered in unprecedented numbers to celebrate their World Cup-bound side.

Head coach Gustavo Alfaro will lead a squad featuring captain Gustavo Gómez, alongside key figures such as Miguel Almirón, Julio Enciso and Diego Gómez as Paraguay prepares for its World Cup campaign.

The passion is expected to continue in the United States, with estimates suggesting around 10,000 Paraguayan supporters could travel to California for the tournament. Thousands of tickets have already been purchased from Paraguay, highlighting the scale of support behind a team making its first World Cup appearance since 2010.

Paraguay opens its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against the host nation, the United States, on June 12 in Los Angeles before facing Türkiye and Australia in Group D.

For a country that has waited more than a decade and a half to return to football’s biggest stage, the farewell scenes offered a powerful reminder that, in Paraguay, the World Cup is more than a tournament—it is a national celebration.
