Real Madrid have officially confirmed that David Alaba will leave the club at the end of the season, with the Austrian defender set to become a free agent after five years at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Spanish giants announced on Friday that Alaba’s contract will expire in June and will not be renewed, bringing an end to a successful era that saw the former Bayern Munich star win 11 trophies in the famous white shirt.
During his time in Madrid, Alaba helped the club win two UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga crowns, the Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Spanish Super Cup trophies.
Real Madrid paid tribute to the 33-year-old in an official statement, thanking him for his professionalism, leadership and contribution since arriving on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2021. The club also stated that “Real Madrid will always be his home.”
Alaba arrived in Spain as one of Europe’s most decorated defenders after winning multiple Bundesliga and Champions League titles with Bayern. He immediately became a key figure in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, inheriting Sergio Ramos’ iconic No. 4 shirt and playing a major role in Madrid’s Champions League and La Liga double during the 2021–22 campaign.
However, the latter part of his Madrid career was heavily disrupted by injuries. A devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against Villarreal in December 2023 sidelined him for more than a year, and further knee complications limited his appearances afterward.
Despite those setbacks, Alaba leaves Madrid as one of the club’s most experienced and respected figures of the modern era. Reports across Europe suggest several clubs, including teams in the Premier League and Serie A, are already monitoring his situation ahead of his availability on a free transfer.
The Austrian captain made more than 100 appearances for Real Madrid and scored memorable goals, including in El Clásico against FC Barcelona and the UEFA Super Cup triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt.
