Semi Ajayi and Hull City have secured promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough F.C. in the Championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium.
Hull City sealed their return to England’s top flight thanks to a stunning stoppage-time winner from Scottish striker Oli McBurnie, whose 95th-minute goal sparked wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
The tense playoff final looked destined for extra time after both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in sweltering conditions at Wembley. Middlesbrough dominated possession for long spells but failed to register a shot on target throughout the encounter.
The breakthrough finally arrived deep into added time when Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn failed to deal with a loose ball inside the box, allowing McBurnie to pounce and fire Hull back into the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
Nigerian international Semi Ajayi played a key role in Hull’s defensive resilience during the final, helping Sergej Jakirović’s side withstand sustained pressure from Middlesbrough before delivering the decisive late blow.
The promotion completed a remarkable turnaround for Hull City, who narrowly escaped relegation to League One last season and spent much of the current campaign battling inconsistency and financial restrictions.
Hull’s road to Wembley had already been surrounded by controversy after Southampton were expelled from the playoffs following a spying scandal involving Middlesbrough training sessions. That decision allowed Middlesbrough back into the promotion race, although Hull owner Acun Ilicali threatened legal action over the handling of the situation before the final eventually proceeded.
For Ajayi, the victory marks another major milestone in his career after joining Hull City following his departure from West Bromwich Albion. The Super Eagles defender has now added Premier League promotion to his growing list of achievements in English football.
Hull City’s promotion is also expected to bring a massive financial boost, with reports estimating the club could earn more than £200 million in Premier League revenue and related payments over the coming seasons.
The Tigers will now prepare for life among English football’s elite once again, while Middlesbrough’s long wait for a Premier League return continues after another painful defeat at Wembley.
