Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has insisted it is too early to make bold predictions about the club’s future, saying the Blues must prove themselves on the pitch before talking about trophies or league positions.
Speaking during his first major media engagements since taking charge at Stamford Bridge, Alonso stressed that while Chelsea’s ambitions are naturally high, only performances over time will determine where the club truly belongs.
“Time will tell, but of course our goals and ambitions are to reach the highest level possible. Time will show where we truly deserve to be.”
The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder officially became Chelsea’s head coach earlier this summer after signing a four-year contract. He inherited a side looking to rebound from a disappointing 2025–26 campaign, which ended with a 10th-place Premier League finish and no European qualification.
Rather than making promises about immediate success, Alonso has consistently emphasised the importance of building solid foundations.
In his introductory press conference, the Spaniard explained that success would come through hard work, collective effort and creating the right mentality within the squad.
“We want to play good football. We want to be active. We want to be aggressive. These players know how to play, and we want to compete well.”
Alonso has also urged supporters to judge his Chelsea side by its performances rather than lofty pre-season declarations.
“I’m not thinking about May, I’m thinking about September,” he said when asked about long-term objectives, adding that his immediate priority is building “a solid base” capable of making Chelsea competitive as quickly as possible.
The 44-year-old has already begun reshaping the squad during the summer transfer window. Chelsea recently agreed a deal to sign French defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, while several fringe players, including Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah, continue to attract interest from clubs across Europe.
Despite the rebuilding process, Alonso believes Chelsea possess enough quality to compete at the highest level if the players embrace his philosophy.
His vision centres on a proactive style of football, tactical flexibility and developing a winning mentality—qualities that defined his managerial success with Bayer Leverkusen before subsequent spells with Real Madrid and now Chelsea.
Chelsea’s pre-season campaign begins later this month with a tour of Australia and Asia, where Alonso will have his first opportunity to implement his ideas ahead of the new Premier League season. Several World Cup participants are expected to join the squad after completing their post-tournament breaks.
