Bafana End 16-Year World Cup Goal Drought as Mokoena Rescues Vital Point Against Czechia

South Africa kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a dramatic late comeback against Czechia, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Atlanta as captain Teboho Mokoena etched his name into Bafana Bafana history.

The Group A encounter was already historic before kick-off. It became the first World Cup match ever to feature two head coaches aged over 70 on opposing touchlines, with Miroslav Koubek (74 years, 290 days) facing Hugo Broos (74 years, 69 days). FIFA had already confirmed both men as the oldest coaches at the tournament, with Koubek holding the overall World Cup age record.

Yet it was the players, not the veteran managers, who ultimately produced the decisive moments in a match neither side could afford to lose.

Czechia struck first after just six minutes when Michal Sadílek capitalised on South Africa’s sluggish start to fire the Europeans into an early lead. The goal handed Czechia the perfect response after their opening defeat to South Korea and briefly put them on course for their first World Cup victory in two decades.

For Sadílek, the strike carried additional significance.

The midfielder’s sixth-minute opener became one of the fastest goals ever scored by a Czech or Czechoslovak player at a World Cup, joining an exclusive list headed by Václav Mašek’s first-minute goal against Mexico in 1962 and Jan Koller’s fifth-minute strike against the United States in 2006.

After taking the lead, Czechia appeared the more dangerous side. Koubek’s men created several opportunities to double their advantage, with striker Patrik Schick threatening from aerial situations and set pieces. However, the failure to find a second goal would eventually prove costly.

South Africa, beaten 2-0 by Mexico in their tournament opener, gradually settled into the contest.

Broos later admitted his side lost concentration during the opening stages but praised their reaction, particularly after halftime when Bafana Bafana began to control larger portions of possession and territory. (Reuters)

“We made a mistake in the beginning and conceded a goal,” Broos said afterward. “But in the second half we were the better team and we deserved something from the game.”

As Czechia retreated deeper and deeper in defence of their slender lead, South Africa sensed an opportunity.

That breakthrough finally arrived seven minutes from time.

A handball decision against Pavel Sulc inside the penalty area handed South Africa a lifeline. After a lengthy review and considerable debate, the spot kick stood, presenting Mokoena with the chance to rescue his country’s World Cup campaign. (Reuters)

The midfielder showed no signs of nerves. Mokoena calmly dispatched the penalty in the 83rd minute, sending the South African supporters into celebration and ending one of the longest waits in the nation’s football history.

The goal was South Africa’s first at a FIFA World Cup since Katlego Mphela scored against France during the 2010 tournament on home soil.

The penalty also preserved South Africa’s flawless World Cup record from the spot.

All three penalties awarded to Bafana Bafana in World Cup history have now been converted, following Shaun Bartlett’s successful effort against Saudi Arabia in 1998 and Quinton Fortune’s strike versus Paraguay in 2002.

Mokoena’s goal ensured that proud record remains intact.

The final whistle left mixed emotions on both sides.

For Czechia, there was frustration at letting victory slip away after dominating the early stages and creating the clearer chances. Koubek insisted his side had been closer to winning and felt the penalty decision was harsh, although he accepted the referee’s judgment.

A defeat would have left Broos’ team on the brink of elimination. Instead, the draw keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive heading into the final round of Group A fixtures. (sr

The result leaves both nations with one point from two matches and facing must-win scenarios in their final group games. Czechia will take on Mexico, while South Africa face South Korea in a decisive encounter that could determine who advances from the group.

Beyond the mathematics, however, this was a match likely to be remembered for its historic milestones.

The oldest managerial duel in World Cup history.

A place in Czech football folklore for Sadílek.

And, perhaps most importantly for South Africans, the moment Mokoena ended a 16-year World Cup scoring drought and reignited Bafana Bafana’s dream on football’s biggest stage.
