The international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine was abandoned on Sunday after Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the second half, prompting an immediate medical response and sending shockwaves through the football world.
The Danish Football Association (DBU) later confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and receiving medical care, providing reassurance after an incident that revived memories of his cardiac arrest during the European Championship in 2021.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off,” the federation said in an official statement.
The incident occurred in the 65th minute of the match in Odense. Television footage showed Eriksen clutching his chest before collapsing to the turf. Players from both teams immediately formed a protective circle around the 34-year-old while medical personnel rushed onto the field.
After receiving treatment, Eriksen regained consciousness and was able to leave the field under his own power before being transported to hospital for further examinations. The match, which Denmark was leading 2-1 at the time, was subsequently abandoned.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen later revealed that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but recovered quickly after treatment.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” Boesen said. “As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”
Boesen added that Eriksen will undergo further medical tests to determine the precise cause of the incident, although early indications suggest his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) functioned correctly. The device was fitted after his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in June 2021.
The emotional scenes prompted messages of support from across the football community. Ukraine’s players and staff remained on the pitch after the abandonment, while teammates expressed relief after receiving updates on Eriksen’s condition.
Eriksen’s collapse comes nearly five years after one of football’s most dramatic medical emergencies, when he suffered a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match in Copenhagen and required life-saving CPR before being revived. Since then, he has remarkably resumed his professional career, playing in the Premier League, Bundesliga and for the Danish national team.
