Jürgen Klopp set for emotional return to the dugout as Germany turn to iconic coach for national team rebuild

Less than two years after stepping away from club management, Jürgen Klopp is on the verge of returning to coaching after agreeing in principle to become Germany’s next national team manager, with the German Football Association (DFB) now working to complete the formalities of his appointment.

The move comes in the wake of Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation following Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay. After an emergency meeting, the DFB confirmed it intends to hold talks with Klopp, revealing that the former Liverpool manager has already expressed his willingness to take over the role.

Klopp currently serves as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer under a long-term contract running until 2029. However, reports from Germany indicate that when he accepted the executive position, he negotiated an exit provision allowing him to leave if offered the Germany national team job. That agreement has paved the way for discussions between the DFB and Red Bull to conclude his release.

For many German supporters, Klopp represents the ideal figure to restore belief after years of underachievement on the international stage. Germany’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup followed disappointing tournaments in 2018 and 2022, prompting fresh calls for sweeping changes within the national team structure.

Klopp’s credentials are unmatched among available German coaches. He won two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund before enjoying extraordinary success at Liverpool, where he lifted the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup while establishing one of Europe’s most admired teams.

His appointment would also mark his first venture into international football after more than two decades in club management.

Speaking during the World Cup, Klopp had initially avoided discussing speculation surrounding the Germany job out of respect for Nagelsmann. However, with the position now officially vacant, the path has opened for what many in Germany see as the country’s most significant coaching appointment since Joachim Löw succeeded Jürgen Klinsmann in 2006.

While negotiations still need to be finalised, optimism is growing that Klopp will soon be unveiled as Germany’s new head coach. If confirmed, he will inherit the responsibility of rebuilding one of world football’s biggest nations and restoring a winning identity ahead of the next major international competitions.
