Muñoz Sends Colombia Into Knockout Rounds as Los Cafeteros Continue Impressive World Cup Run

Colombia secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo, with Daniel Muñoz once again proving the difference as Los Cafeteros maintained their perfect start to the tournament.

In a match that began at a frenetic pace, Colombia controlled much of the possession and territorial advantage but struggled to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Congolese side that grew into the contest after weather-related cooling breaks and periods of sustained pressure.

The deadlock finally ended in the 76th minute when Muñoz delivered once again for his country, scoring his second goal of the tournament after also finding the net in Colombia’s opening victory against Uzbekistan.

The goal was enough to seal a crucial three points and officially send Colombia into the knockout rounds, making them the seventh nation to secure qualification after Mexico, the United States, Germany, Argentina, France and Norway.

The victory also continued one of the most impressive attacking streaks in World Cup football. Colombia have now scored in 11 consecutive World Cup matches, underlining the consistency that has transformed them into one of South America’s most dangerous tournament teams.

Historically, the result is significant.

Only once before had Colombia won their opening two matches at a FIFA World Cup—during their memorable 2014 campaign in Brazil, where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Twelve years later, this generation has matched that achievement and now has the opportunity to go even further.

The qualification picture is now straightforward. Colombia will secure first place in Group K if they avoid defeat against Portugal in their final group-stage match, potentially setting up a more favorable knockout-round path.

Defensively, the victory was equally important. DR Congo arrived full of confidence after their historic draw against Portugal and pushed Colombia throughout the contest with physicality, pace and dangerous counterattacks. Yet Colombia remained composed, limiting clear-cut opportunities and preserving a clean sheet when it mattered most.

As the final whistle sounded, Colombian players celebrated not only a victory but confirmation that their World Cup journey will continue into the knockout stages.

With two wins from two matches, an in-form Daniel Muñoz and qualification already secured, Los Cafeteros are rapidly emerging as one of the tournament’s most complete teams.
