Spain suffered an unexpected setback in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by debutants Cape Verde in Group H.
Widely regarded as one of the tournament favorites, Spain entered the contest expected to comfortably dispatch the World Cup newcomers. Instead, they encountered a determined Cape Verde side whose defensive organization and goalkeeping excellence prevented La Roja from making a winning start.
Luis de la Fuente’s men controlled possession, dictated tempo and spent long periods camped in Cape Verde territory. Yet despite creating numerous chances, they repeatedly found themselves denied by an inspired Vozinha, who delivered arguably the finest performance of his international career.
The clearest opening of the first half fell to Ferran Torres, whose close-range effort crashed against the crossbar before Vozinha reacted quickly to preserve the deadlock. The veteran goalkeeper continued his heroics throughout the match, frustrating Spain whenever opportunities emerged.
Seeking greater attacking penetration, Spain introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal during the second half, but even the Barcelona winger could not provide the breakthrough. Cape Verde’s compact defensive structure remained intact as the clock ticked down.
The result raises early questions for Spain despite only one match having been played. The 2010 world champions have now failed to defeat an African opponent in their last three World Cup encounters, continuing a trend that began against Morocco in Russia and persisted in Qatar.
Historically, the draw places Spain in unusual company. Only a handful of eventual World Cup champions have begun their campaigns with a goalless draw, and La Roja now face increased pressure to secure victories in their remaining group-stage fixtures.
For Cape Verde, the point felt like a victory. For Spain, it felt like an opportunity missed.
What was expected to be a routine opening assignment instead became one of the defining stories of the tournament’s first week, with the World Cup debutants leaving Atlanta celebrated as heroes and Spain left searching for answers before their next Group H challenge.
