USA DESTROY PARAGUAY IN HISTORIC FIRST-HALF MASTERCLASS AS BALOGUN BRACE MAKES WORLD CUP HISTORY

The United States produced one of their most dominant World Cup performances in modern history, sweeping aside Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in a match defined by a blistering first-half attacking display and a record-breaking start under Mauricio Pochettino.

Folarin Balogun scored twice in a devastating opening 31 minutes as the USA raced into a 2-0 lead before adding a third goal deep into first-half stoppage time, establishing a three-goal advantage by the break,  a historic first for a CONCACAF nation against a CONMEBOL opponent at a World Cup.

The breakthrough came early when Damian Bobadilla turned the ball into his own net in the 7th minute, handing the hosts a dream start. From there, the USA never looked back, overwhelming Paraguay with pace, intensity, and clinical finishing.

Balogun doubled the lead in the 31st minute before striking again in first-half stoppage time (45+5), completing a brace that effectively ended the contest before halftime.

The 3-0 scoreline marked a historic milestone: the first time in men’s World Cup history that a CONCACAF team had led a CONMEBOL opponent by three goals at the interval.

Paraguay briefly responded after the break through Mauricio in the 73rd minute, but the USA quickly restored control and closed out a commanding 4-1 victory, matching their largest-ever World Cup winning margin against a South American opponent.

The win also evoked memories of the USA’s 1930 World Cup triumph over Paraguay, as statistical symmetry added historical weight to an already emphatic performance.

Balogun was named Man of the Match after a performance defined by movement, finishing, and relentless attacking pressure.

For Pochettino, the result represented a statement victory on home soil and a defining early tournament moment for a United States side suddenly surging with momentum
