Canada Soccer has thrown its full support behind captain Alphonso Davies after the Bayern Munich star suffered another injury setback just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an official statement released Friday, Canada Soccer confirmed it is working closely with Bayern Munich’s medical staff to oversee Davies’ recovery following a hamstring injury sustained during Bayern’s UEFA Champions League semifinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
“We’re behind you, Captain,” the federation said in a public message to the 25-year-old defender.
Canada Soccer added that it remains in “close contact” with both Davies and Bayern’s medical team while mobilizing “every available resource,” including specialized soft tissue experts, to help accelerate his return ahead of the World Cup.
Bayern Munich confirmed that Davies suffered a muscle injury in his left hamstring during Wednesday’s second-leg semifinal against PSG and will be sidelined for “several weeks.”
The timing has sparked growing concern across Canadian football circles, with the co-host nation scheduled to open its FIFA World Cup campaign on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Reports from Canadian media suggest Davies could miss between four and five weeks, placing his availability for the tournament in doubt.
Davies, widely regarded as the face of Canadian football, has endured a frustrating run of injuries over the past year. The left-back previously battled an ACL injury and recurring muscle problems that limited his appearances for both club and country.
Despite the setback, Canada Soccer remains optimistic that its captain can return in time for the biggest tournament ever staged on Canadian soil.
The national team’s backing reflects the importance of Davies not only as a player, but also as a symbol of Canada’s hopes heading into a historic World Cup hosted jointly by Canada, United States and Mexico.
